플라스틱은 분해되지 않는다는 오해

현재 세계 바다에는 250 000톤이 넘는 플라스틱 폐기물이 떠다니고 있습니다. 태평양은 북반구에서 가장 오염된 수역으로 평가되며, 남반구에서는 인도양이 태평양과 대서양을 합친 것보다 더 오염된 것으로 나타났습니다. 동시에 태평양은 지구에서 플라스틱 폐기물로 가장 오염된 바다로 설명됩니다. 플라스틱 오염은 지배적인 바람과 해류의 영향을 받아 세계 바다를 이동합니다. 북반구에서는 수년에 걸친 장기적인 물의 이동과 그에 따른 폐기물의 이동이 해양 분지 중심부에 플라스틱 쓰레기를 모이게 한다는 사실이 확인되었습니다. 남반구의 모든 바다에서도 비슷한 양상이 발견되었습니다. 놀랍게도 남반구 바다에서 측정된 플라스틱 총량은 북반구와 같은 수량 범위에 있습니다. 북반구의 플라스틱 유입원이 남반구보다 훨씬 많다는 점을 고려하면 뜻밖의 결과입니다. 이는 플라스틱 제품이 이전에 생각했던 것보다 해류 사이와 두 반구 사이를 더 쉽게 이동하고 재분포한다는 뜻입니다.

하지만 떠다니는 미세플라스틱의 최종 행선지는 바다 표면이 아닙니다. 해수면에 예상보다 훨씬 적은 미세플라스틱이 있다는 관찰은 플라스틱 폐기물을 수면에서 제거하는 어떤 과정이 존재함을 보여 줍니다. 여기에는 자외선 분해, 생분해, 생물의 섭취, 생물이 달라붙어 부력이 줄어드는 현상과 해저 침강, 해안으로 밀려오는 과정이 포함됩니다.

플라스틱 폐기물은 물리화학적, 즉 비생물적 과정이나 생물적 과정인 생분해를 통해 분해될 수 있습니다. 기계적 성격의 물리적인 힘이 고분자 재료를 파괴하는 것은 보통 첫 단계로 여겨지며, 모든 분해 과정에서 매우 중요한 역할을 합니다. 환경 중 플라스틱 분해는 광분해, 가수분해, 열산화 분해, 생분해라는 네 가지 주요 기전 중 하나 또는 그 조합으로 일어납니다. 해양환경 같은 자연조건에서는 저압 폴리에틸렌, 고압 폴리에틸렌, 폴리프로필렌(LDPE, HDPE, PP) 같은 일반 플라스틱의 분해가 주로 UV-B에 의한 광분해로 시작됩니다. 그 뒤 열산화와, 그보다 적은 정도로 물에 의한 분해인 가수분해가 이어집니다.

우즈홀 해양연구소 과학자들이 발표한 새로운 연구에 따르면, 세계에서 가장 흔한 플라스틱 중 하나인 폴리스티렌(PS)은 햇빛의 영향으로 이전에 생각한 수천 년이 아니라 수십 년 또는 수백 년 안에 분해될 수 있습니다. 폴리스티렌의 부분 분해는 플라스틱 종류에 따라 불과 10–50년 만에 일어납니다. 완전한 광화학적 산화는 300–450년 안에 가능합니다. 햇빛은 플라스틱을 물리적으로 부수는 데 그치지 않고, 용존 유기탄소와 대기로 들어가는 소량의 이산화탄소로 화학적으로 분해합니다.

분해 과정은 플라스틱이 더 작은 조각으로 깨지는 파편화와 고분자의 분자량 감소를 일으킵니다. 이렇게 생긴 저분자량 물질은 미생물이 대사할 수 있습니다. 어쨌든 전체 과정은 보통 매우 느리게 진행되므로, 다른 생물이 플라스틱 고분자를 완전히 분해하는 데 50년 이상 걸릴 수 있습니다.

복잡한 천연 및 합성 화합물 중 상당수는 개별 균주가 아니라 미생물 군집에 의해 생분해됩니다. 이는 개별 생물의 대사 능력이 제한되어 있기 때문일 가능성이 큽니다. 따라서 현대사회가 직면한 주요 환경 문제 중 하나인 플라스틱 폐기물은 서로 다른 생물 집단이 함께 작용할 때 더 효율적으로 분해될 수 있다고 추정할 수 있습니다. 플라스틱 생분해는 주로 혐기성 미생물이 공기가 없는 상태에서 고분자 재료를 바이오가스와 바이오매스로 바꾸는 것을 뜻합니다. 이들은 고분자를 성장에 필요한 탄소원으로 효율적으로 활용할 수 있습니다. 하지만 플라스틱 자체의 성질과 독특한 물리화학적 특성이 생분해를 방해하며, 성장에 적합하지 않은 기질로 만듭니다.

플라스틱 폐기물의 생분해는 효소가 고분자 사슬을 올리고머, 이합체, 단량체 같은 저분자량 화합물로 끊는 데서 시작됩니다. 효소가 고분자에 결합하고 물에 의한 가수분해를 촉매, 즉 가속하는 방식입니다. 과정의 마지막에는 이 저분자 화합물이 이산화탄소와 물로 바뀝니다. 세균, 곰팡이, 조류는 플라스틱 고분자를 효과적으로 분해할 수 있는 생물로 보고되고 있습니다.

곰팡이는 고분자 재료 분해에서 핵심 역할을 합니다. 균사체는 표면을 통과해 내부 깊숙이 효율적으로 침투하여 가능한 한 많은 기질을 분해할 수 있습니다. 또한 탈중합효소 같은 세포외 효소를 분비해 고분자 기질을 올리고머, 이합체, 단량체, 즉 저분자량 조각으로 나눌 수 있습니다. 이후 이 단량체는 곰팡이에 흡수되어 동화되거나, 세포 내 효소계에 의해 이산화탄소와 물로 바뀝니다. 이런 관점에서 백색부후균과 갈색부후균은 플라스틱 고분자를 효과적으로 분해하는 생물로 자주 언급됩니다.

마찬가지로 세균 균주도 오염된 물이나 토양에서 플라스틱 고분자를 분해할 수 있습니다. 여러 연구는 특화된 세균에 의한 플라스틱 생분해가 오염 생태계를 위한 유망한 생물학적 복원 전략이 될 수 있다고 보고했습니다. Pseudomonas spp., Bacillus spp., Streptomyces spp. 같은 균주는 여러 플라스틱 고분자를 높은 효율로 분해합니다. 어쨌든 곰팡이의 플라스틱 분해 속도는 세균 균주가 달성한 속도보다 빠릅니다. 반면 일부 저자들은 더 안정적인 조건이 필요한 곰팡이에 비해 세균은 배양하기 쉽고 고분자 재료 분해에 활용하기도 쉽다고 보고합니다.

지금까지 조류 종이 플라스틱 폐기물 오염을 완화하는 능력을 보고한 연구는 소수에 불과합니다. 이 관찰은 성장에 필수적인 햇빛, 영양분, 물 같은 환경 요인이 있을 때 사상성 조류가 플라스틱 폐기물 표면에 정착할 수 있다는 내용이었습니다. Bacillariophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae의 몇몇 무해하고 독성이 없는 조류 종은 폴리에틸렌 표면을 덮고, 연못·호수·폐수 등 여러 오염된 수환경에서 조류 생물막을 형성할 수 있는 것으로 밝혀졌습니다. 이와 관련해 저자들은 분리하기 쉽고 빠르게 자라는 Phormidium lucidum과 Oscillatoria subbrevis, 즉 담수의 무독성 남세균이 PE 표면에 군집을 만들고 전처리 없이 HDPE를 효율적으로 분해할 수 있다고 보고합니다.

또한 PETase 효소를 얻는 데 쓰이는 Ideonella sakaiensis와 Pestalotiopsis microspore 같은 일부 세균과 곰팡이는, 플라스틱 폐기물 대부분이 쌓이는 해양환경에 잘 적응하지 못합니다. 규조류 Phaeodactylum tricornutum을 미생물 공장으로 활용해 개선된 PETase를 만드는 데 성공했습니다. 이 효소는 PET와 공중합체 PETG, 즉 글리콜 변성 폴리에틸렌 테레프탈레이트에 활성을 보입니다.

여러 무척추동물의 고분자 생분해도 확인되었습니다. 슈퍼웜 Zophobas atratus, 화랑곡나방 Plodia interpunctella, 큰꿀벌부채명나방 Galleria mellonella, 갈색거저리 유충 Tenebrio molitor, 작은꿀벌부채명나방 Achroia grisella, 육상 달팽이(Achatina fulica), 흰개미와 다른 무척추동물이 여기에 포함됩니다. 이렇게 뛰어난 플라스틱 고분자 분해 능력은 보통 장내 공생 미생물 덕분으로 여겨집니다. 일부 무척추동물이 목재나 다른 고분자 화합물을 먹을 수 있는 것도 이 미생물들이 참여하기 때문입니다.

플라스틱은 고유한 특성 덕분에 널리 쓰이게 되었고, 우리 삶에서 가장 필요한 재료 중 하나로 여겨집니다. 하지만 플라스틱 폐기물의 해로운 영향은 사용량과 환경에 쌓이는 양에 비례합니다. 따라서 플라스틱 재료의 특성은 미생물의 분해뿐 아니라 표면 정착에도 큰 과제가 됩니다. 여러 연구자들이 다양한 미생물과 무척추동물의 플라스틱 생분해 참여를 확인했으며, 이는 재료의 생분해 과정에서 이들이 근본적인 역할을 한다는 것을 보여 줍니다.

이를 바탕으로 전문 과학자들은 플라스틱 폐기물의 물리적 또는 화학적 전처리가 첫 번째이자 중요한 단계이며, 흔히 미생물에 의한 플라스틱 고분자 분해의 전제 조건이라는 점을 강조합니다. 미생물, 조류, 플라스틱을 먹는 곤충, 기타 무척추동물은 앞으로 플라스틱 생분해에서 중요한 역할을 할 수 있습니다. 연구들은 환경에 플라스틱 폐기물이 쌓이는 문제를 해결하기 위해 친환경적이고 효율적이며 저렴한 처리·분해 기술의 개발을 제안합니다.
